The United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including 17 Goals (SDG) to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone. More specifically SDG4 is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. SDG5 is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. These two objectives are interrelated.

Studies show that girls’ education is a key community investment to break the cycle of poverty.

Education is a universal human right.

Education improves literacy, numeracy and life skills.

Education prevents child marriage and early pregnancy.

Education saves mothers’ lives.

Education decreases child mortality.

Education contributes to girls’ empowerment.

Education increases employment opportunities.

Education encourages tolerance.

Education contributes to conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

Education helps address climate change.
